Tariq Banuri
Tariq Banuri, Chairman, Higher Education Commission, Government of Pakistan, holds a PhD in Economics from Harvard University. He started his career as a member of the erstwhile Civil Service of Pakistan, and served in a number of positions, including as Professor of Economics, University of Utah; Director, UN Division for Sustainable Development; founder and first Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute, Islamabad; Director, Asia Centre of the Stockholm Environment Institute; and Executive Director of the Global Change Impact Studies Centre, Islamabad. In the past, he has served on national as well as international forums for policy and research, including as Coordinating Lead Author on the Nobel Prize winning Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change; member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change; member of the UN Committee on Development Policy; member of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Council; member of the Central Board of Governors of the State Bank of Pakistan; and member/secretary of the Steering Committee on Higher Education. In 2002, he was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz for his services to research and education.
