Mushtaq Kassim Chhapra

Mushtaq Kassim Chhapra was born on September 7, 1949, in Karachi, Pakistan. He attended St. Lawrence High School, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavours. Mushtaq’s professional journey began in the manufacturing sector, where he became a prominent figure in the production of plastic containers and paper products. His company grew to become one of the largest manufacturers and exporters in the industry, serving both local and international markets.

As the Managing Director of the Coastal Group of Companies, Mushtaq oversaw various enterprises, including Coastal Synthetics (Pvt) Limited, a regenerated polyester staple fibre manufacturing company, and Coastal Converters (Private) Limited, which specialized in paper core tubes. He also served as the Chairman of M/s. Transpak Pvt. Limited, a PET bottle manufacturing company, and was involved with M/s. CBM Plastics, manufacturers of HDPE containers.

Beyond his business acumen, Mushtaq played a significant role in industry advocacy as the Honorary Consulate General of Nepal at Karachi. His commitment to corporate social responsibility was evident through his involvement in several philanthropic initiatives. He was a founder and member of the Board of Governors at The Kidney Centre, established in 1985, which provides free or subsidized high-quality kidney-related treatment for the underprivileged.

Mushtaq also chaired the Executive Committee of the Patients’ Aid Foundation (PAF), founded in 1991, which supports Jinnah Hospital by reconstructing buildings and providing essential equipment and resources. In 1995, he co-founded The Citizens Foundation (TCF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing formal primary and secondary education to the poor. TCF started with five schools in Karachi and has since grown to become the largest privately owned low-cost formal schooling system in the world.

His dedication to education and healthcare extended to his roles on the Boards of Governors for the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT) and the Institute of Business Administration (IBA).

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to humanity and the nation, Mushtaq was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) in 2017 by the President of Pakistan. His efforts were further acknowledged through prestigious awards such as the WISE Awards by the Qatar Foundation, which recognized the transformative achievements of The Citizens Foundation, and The Skoll Award from the Skoll Foundation in Oxford, United Kingdom, for his work in social entrepreneurship, education, and economic opportunity.
