Irfan Javed

Irfan Javed is a distinguished Pakistani writer with a notable career in literature. He is a gold medallist in the Master’s degree program in Sociology and has a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering.

Javed began his literary journey as a college student and became a part of the literary magazine Funoon, edited by Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi in the 1990s. His short stories, essays, and sketches have since appeared in leading Urdu literary magazines.

His literary credentials include winning the Oxford University Press/KLF ‘Best Book in Urdu Prose’ Award in 2023 and the Pakistan Academy of Letters’ Saadat Hassan Manto Award for the ‘Best Book in Urdu Prose’ in 2021 for his book ‘Ajaib Khana’. Javed has also been an active participant in literary events, serving as a moderator, host, and speaker at the Karachi Literature Festival (KLF), the Islamabad Literature Festival (ILF), and the Karachi Arts Council’s Aalmi Urdu Conference. His books ‘Darwazay’ and ‘Surkhab’ were also finalists in the OUP/KLF awards.

Javed’s published works include ‘Coffee House’ (short stories), ‘Darwazay’, ‘Surkhab’, ‘Aadmi’ (literary sketches), and ‘Ajaib Khana’ (essays). He has also compiled and critically analysed short stories by Asif Farrukhi, Muhammad Ilyas, and M. Hameed Shahid. His best-selling, popular, and critically acclaimed books have been partly serialized for years in the Sunday Magazine of Daily Jang.

He has also extensively contributed to English publications including The News and The Friday Times. His book on political science, ‘Principles of Political Science,’ has been taught as a reference book for graduate students. He also remained editor of the Urdu section of ‘Auj’, the literary magazine of the prestigious National School of Public Policy.
