Deborah Baker

Deborah Baker‘s most recent book, The Last Englishmen: Love, War and the End of Empire (2018) weaves together a story of Himalayan exploration and India’s experience of the Second World War. Set in Calcutta, London, and the high Himalayas, its cast of subjects include English and Indian writers and painters, explorers, communist spies and political rogues. Her last book, The Convert, about the American convert and ward of Maulana Mawdudi, Maryam Jameelah, was a finalist for the National Book Award. Baker has received Guggenheim and Cullman fellowships as well as a Whiting award for creative nonfiction. She divides her time between India and New York.
